Jersey Man Fined £6000 For Haircut

Updated: Jul 22, 2020

You read that headline right. A man has taken a huge financial hit for popping out for a haircut on the island of Guernsey.

A Jersey man who travelled to the island of Guernsey to see his wife has been fined after it was discovered he disobeyed a two week isolation period.

The court heard that Gareth Le Monnier visited his wife on the island of Guernsey from his home on Jersey on July 3rd.

But, instead of isolating himself from the general public for the 14-day period required due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mr Le Monnier, 37, went for a (probably well needed) haircut - to the tune of £30

Gareth visited the local Toni & Guy salon a couple of days before the isolation period was due to end, because what's the worst that could happen, right?

Well, a £6000 fine is probably up there with hospitalising the whole salon after potentially passing on Covid-19 - if he was a carrier.

He also allegedly visited other shops on July 15th and 16th according to LadBible

Border Agency staff made the discovery that Le Monnier had flouted quarantine when making a welfare check on July 16th at his wife's address - and they weren't there.

Undeterred, the Agents hung around until they returned, with Gareth hiding in the passenger's seat to avoid detection. He was subsequently arrested.

Judge Graeme McKerrell spoke at the hearing and explained that Mr Le Monnier should have known when he could leave the house and that although he may not have been ill, he could have been a carrier of the disease.

He explained: "This was a knowing and deliberate breach.

"I have read the letter, but working out when 14 days expires is not rocket science.

"You have put your needs and the needs of your family before the wider public good, but it is the wider public good that has to prevail.

"You have been selfish across the board."

Gareth Le Monnier was charged (and made to pay before leaving custody) with two counts of breaching quarantine rules and fined £3000 per count, totaling £6000 - plus the £30 he spent in the salon, leaving him £6030 out of pocket for the sake of a mop chop.

The moral of the story is: Stay at home. Don't stay at home. Don't go to work. Go to work. Don't see your friends. See your friends. Don't go to the pub. Go to the pub. But if you do go to the pub, whatever you do, don't go to the pub.
